The much-anticipated Tamil romantic action thriller Nesippaya, directed by Vishnuvardhan, is finally preparing for its OTT release after a theatrical run earlier this year. Featuring debutant Akash Murali and Aditi Shankar as the lead pair, the movie hit theaters on 14 January 2025.
Although the movie made waves with its emotionally high-octane content and overseas backdrop, it received a lukewarm reception from critics and audiences.
Movie Summary
Nesippaya is a romance layered in a legal thriller. Set in India and Portugal, the film traces Arjun, a young entrepreneur who rushes to the aid of his former girlfriend Diya when she is arrested abroad on charges of murder. Despite their acrimonious breakup a few years earlier, Arjun's unfaltering loyalty lands him in a David-versus-Goliath battle with powerful forces. The film weaves in elements of betrayal, corporate greed, hidden identities, and a searingly personal quest for truth.
As Arjun digs deeper, he uncovers a conspiracy by Diya's boss and his inner circle that involves fake witnesses, coerced testimonies, and family secrets. The film touches on sensitive themes such as sexuality, class privilege, and abuse of power, culminating in a dramatic showdown where justice is delivered. While the screenplay attempted to strike a balance between emotion and suspense, the majority of critics believed the execution was uneven.
Reviews
Though Nesippaya boasted the right ingredients—a new cast, picturesque locales, and an emotional narrative—it could not quite come together as a cinematic experience. Reviews ranged from 2 to 2.5 stars out of 5, with the predictable storyline and narrative lag being cited as main drawbacks. Performances, particularly by Aditi Shankar and the ensemble cast, were praised, however. The emotional heart of the film, watered down by inconsistent pacing, was praised for its attempt to bring real human conflicts to light.

Nesippaya will be released on SunNXT on May 16, 2025. The audiences can now stream the film online with a subscription on the SunNXT platform.
