The supernatural thriller genre is gaining strength in Indian cinema, with filmmakers exploring themes of good vs. evil, typically combining horror with spirituality. One of these films is a Telugu film Odela 2, will fascinate audiences with its engaging storyline and chilling imagery.
A sequel to the 2022 hit Odela Railway Station, the film reprises the rural horror setting of Odela, Telangana, as the battle between avenging ghosts and powerful protectors goes to a new level. Odela 2 is helmed by Ashok Teja and features Tamannaah Bhatia as the central character, Bhairavi, in the action-packed and God-related role.Movie Summary
Odela 2 picks up from where Odela left, as the village of Odela continues to be haunted by the malevolent spirit of Tirupati, a serial killer and rapist who was murdered by his wife, Radha. His ill-fated burial following his hanging leads to his spirit being reborn, causing destruction in the village again. As the ghost possesses local men, the village is gripped with fear, with newlywed brides being its prime victims.
Being an antidote to the increasing supernatural threat, Radha is approached by the villagers for advice even though she has been imprisoned. Radha makes an appearance to them with that of her estranged sister Bhairavi (played by Tamannaah Bhatia) being a Naga Sadhu, with supernatural powers radiating from Lord Shiva's auspicious mantra recited by living as an ascetic. As Bhairavi enters Odela, she brings hope to the villagers, determined to put an end to Tirupati’s vengeful rampage. Armed with her spiritual knowledge and the help of a local Muslim baba, she performs rituals to battle the spirit’s control over the men. The film blends themes of spirituality, supernatural forces, and village superstitions, as Bhairavi faces tremendous challenges in her quest to restore peace.
Review
The film received mixed reviews from critics. Tamannaah Bhatia’s performance was widely praised, with many noting her strong presence in an otherwise lackluster film. Critics highlighted the film's visually engaging elements, including the cinematography and occasional effective VFX, but found the narrative lacking. Issues with a sluggish second half, a poorly structured script, excessive violence, and a reliance on familiar horror tropes were commonly cited. Despite its potential as a supernatural thriller, the film's conventional storyline, lack of emotional depth, and slow pacing led to disappointment for many.
